The story of Grenouille, a man born in 18th-century France, "one of the most gifted and abominable personages in an era that knew no lack of gifted and abominable personages."  He has no odor, which makes his sense of smell the most sensitive on earth.  This leads him to murder a number of beautiful young women in a quest to extract the odor from their bodies and create the world's greatest perfume, with which to become fully human (and possibly enslave humanity).  A fascinating and highly entertaining exploration of the world of smell.
